Star footballers in my year included Ronnie Crennell, Chris Todd, Billy Lumsdon, David Watson (no relation), David Oliver and of course "Howey" Kendall. I believe Peter Graham became a first class cricketer.
I have vivid memories of the temporary dining arrangements when the new science block was being built. We would all trudge down to the Washington Miners Welfare buildings in Spout Lane for lunch served in the main hall. The woodblock flooring was covered in protective tarpaulins which created brilliant tripping hazards and vast cheers would erupt as another bottle green clad child measured their length complete with jam rolypoly and custard !
I have vague memories of a certain Brian Ferry, a very talented artist, winning a Fry's/Cadbury's sponsored painting competition - theme "Fairground" - organised by Mr. Howard, the arts master.
Teachers I admired included Mr. Craig, Basher Bates, Mr. Coxon, Mr. Gaffney, Joe Dodd and Miss Walton, those at the opposite end of the spectrum included "Doc" Telford, "Handsome" Curtis, "Leatherlip" Leathard and Oliver.
In later years I worked with George Nichol in the drawing office at Coles Cranes and met Bob Marshall a few times when he was playing bass guitar in the "Influence" band and later had chart success with John Miles. The last I heard was that Bob owned a night club in Sunderland.
When I left school I started an engineering apprenticeship at Clarke Chapman and graduated to being a draughtsman in various engineering companies before taking Norman Tebbit's advice and taking my bike, complete with wife and two boys, down to sunny London in 1983. I have been employed in estates management with the University of London since 1988, live in Harrow, Middlesex and look forward to reading any similar anecdotes, hopefully more interesting than mine, on this website.
